BUCKSPORT — Two months after opting not to hear a proposal from the Schoodic International Sculpture Symposium, the town’s Economic Development Committee has agreed to reconsider the matter.
The symposium, according to its website, is an “artist in residency program that gives sculptors from Maine and around the world the chance to focus on a single piece of public art created in Maine granite.”
More than a dozen sculptures have been installed in coastal communities in Hancock and Washington counties in recent years.
When the committee met in March, concerns about what a sculpture would cost and the possibility it might have an abstract appearance prompted committee members to say thanks but no thanks to hearing from the symposium.
The issue was revisited at the request of committee member and town councilor David Kee, who was out of town for the March meeting. Kee said he felt the committee should look into the proposal more closely before deciding one way or another.
