Grasshopper Shop’s New Owner Has Deep Hancock County Roots

Written by  Fenceviewer Staff Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at 3:12 pm

ELLSWORTH — The Grasshopper Shop’s new owner, Elizabeth McMillan, has deep roots in Hancock County.

She is the daughter of Evelyn Milner and stepfather Craig Milner. Her father, the late Skip Baker, was well known locally for his long tenure as manager of The Grand’s film series.

McMillan lived in Lamoine with her parents and two sisters until age 15 when she moved with her mother, stepfather and sisters, first to Orono and then to Wellesley, Mass., where she graduated from high school.

After college and a busy life that took her as far afield as San Francisco, Elizabeth returned to Maine and married the former boy-next-door, Jim McMillan, now a commercial fisherman. They built a home in Lamoine on land that had been in Elizabeth’s family for generations. They have lived there for seven years with sons Jason and Cory.

“It’s our intention to continue to offer the same unique merchandise and great service everyone expects to find at the Grasshopper Shop,” McMillan said. Former owner Ken Schweikert will remain on hand throughout 2012 to help with the transition.
