Sailors nab a Bullet

Written by  Friday, May 18, 2012 at 4:03 pm

ROCKLAND — Josiah Welch and Annie Wray took home a bullet – a first-place finish – on behalf of the Mount Desert Island High School sailing team in Rockland at the Breakwater Blast regatta on May 13.

A group of nine freshmen and sophomores traveled to Rockland to represent the Trojans at the junior varsity regatta. Out of 1 teams, MDI came in third.

“They looked good,” said head coach George Deans. “They were racing against students with a comparable experience level and did very well.”

MDI placed behind a powerhouse Falmouth team that, according to Deans, scored a bullet in every single race except one. And in that race, Falmouth was overthrown by Welch and Wray.

“We spoiled their perfect day,” said Deans. “It was a good day all the way around, I was really pleased.”

On Saturday and Sunday, May 18 and 19, the sailing team will travel to Castine for the Downeast Regatta, which serves as the state and New England championship regatta.

“We look forward to this one,” said Deans. “It’s a fun time, being able to see all of our competition is important. And hopefully we’ll have some great sailing weather.”
