Beckwith, Pettingill Combine to Shutout Tigers

Written by  Hugh Bowden Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at 2:23 pm

ELLSWORTH — Righthander Del Beckwith allowed just three hits in six innings and relief pitcher Codey Pettingill struck out the side in the seventh as the Ellsworth Eagles downed Sumner 5-0 on Monday.

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Kyle Haslam walked and scored on a double by Riley DeWitt.

In the third inning, Conor Maguire reached base on an error, went to second on a wild pitch, to third on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Haslam.

The Eagles added three more runs in the fifth off Tiger righthander Tristan Rayner.

With one out, Beckwith and Jacob Maguire singled and Haslam was walked intentionally, loading the bases.

Beckwith scored on a groundout by DeWitt and Brandon Braley then lofted a single into short left field to drive in Maguire and Haslam.

The Eagles threatened for more in the sixth, loading the bases with one out on a double by Pat Kidder and walks to Conor Maguire and Beckwith, Haslam grounded into a force at home and Zach Sanchez struck out.
