Ten County Players Move to Round of 48

ORONO — Ten players from Hancock County tennis teams have advanced to the State Singles Round of 48 that will begin on Friday, May 25, at Colby College in Waterville.

In Saturday’s Eastern Maine regional competition at various sites in Orono, Bangor, Brewer and Hermon, Ina Maloney and Tyler Small of the Ellsworth Eagles, Mea Clark, Julia Christie and Mia Musetti of the Mount Desert Island Trojans, Sotherd Steer, Maddie Theoharidis, Johnny Xue and Jasper Adam of the George Stevens Academy Eagles and Esther Adams of the Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners all won their qualifying round matches.

In girls’ action, Maloney bested Kristen Gaudet of Old Town 8-2 in second round play and cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Kristi Mackin of Penobscot Valley in the qualifying round.

Clark didn’t lose a game in defeating Nicole Hatch of Penobscot Valley 8-0 in the second round and Ashley Gibula of Brewer 6-0, 6-0 in the qualifying round.

Christie nearly followed suit, downing Katie Stanley of Schenck 8-0 in the second round and Rebekah Boomer of Hampden 6-0, 6-1 in the qualifying round.

Musetti defeated Crystal Naylor of Washington Academy 8-2 in the second round and Charlotte Reiter of GSA 6-3, 6-4 in the qualifying round.

Steer bested Claire Valley of Brewer 8-1 in the second round and Addie Cutshall of Bangor 6-2, 6-2 in the qualifying round.

Theoharidis defeated Belle Wingert of Piscataquis 8-1 in the second round and Kristi Reichel of Hampden 6-3, 6-4 in the qualifying round.

Adams won by default over Elizabeth McAvoy of Belfast in the second round and downed Megan Burrill of Lee Academy 6-0, 6-2 in the qualifying round.

In boys’ action, Small won every game in downing Cody Hodgins of Maine Central Institute 8-0 in the second round and Ben Smith of Old Town 6-0, 6-0 in the qualifying round.

Xue best Williber Jia Dong Chu of MCI 8-2 in the second round and Josh Theriault of Brewer 6-2, 6-2 in the qualifying round.

Adam prevailed 8-1 over Logan Jipson of Penobscot Valley in the second round and downed Jacob Reynolds of Hermon 6-2, 6-1 in the qualifying round.

Also losing in the qualifying round were Ashley Harding and Paige Lewis of Ellsworth, Garrett Lee of MDI, Alex Heilner of GSA and Ole Bartos of Deer Isle-Stonington.

At the Round of 48, preliminary play will get under way at 8:30 a.m. and the first round will start at 1:15 p.m.

In case of inclement weather, the event will move to the Racket and Fitness Center in Portland.
