Blue Hill Planning Board Ponders Proposed Mud Runs

Written by  Jennifer Osborn Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at 1:29 pm

BLUE HILL — For many, the town of Blue Hill conjures images of the bay, boats, farm-fresh food, the Blue Hill Fair and a thriving arts scene.

But soon Blue Hill may be known for something else: mud runs, not of the two-legged variety but the four-wheeled.

For the uninitiated, mud runs involve trucks with big tires racing each other on a mud track.

Dan Brown of Gravelwood Farm, which is off Morgan Bay Road, proposes to hold monthly races from May to October on his 60-acre property.

Brown held mud runs on a 300-foot-long, 4-foot-deep track last summer and they were a hit. One event had over 700 spectators.

“It appeals to a wide cross section,” Brown told the Blue Hill Planning Board at its meeting Monday. “I struggled with whether I should put a flier up at the [Blue Hill] Co-op or not, but I did.”

Brown told the board that when he was younger, he would ride along paper company roads, but today those have been closed off or are otherwise not available.

Brown appeared before the board to share details of his proposal. He apologized for not seeking board or town approval for last summer’s events.

Code Enforcement Officer Judy Jenkins explained that since the mud runs are a commercial endeavor, a commercial site plan review permit is needed.
