MOUNT DESERT — An ordinance that would have allowed construction of a pier or other “marine structure” only if there was no “practicable alternative” that would cause less environmental damage was defeated by voters at town meeting on Tuesday.
Somesville resident Keating Pepper said piers cause little if any environmental damage, but add significantly to property value, thus generating more tax revenue for the town.
Opponents of the proposed ordinance said it wasn’t needed because state law already requires an analysis of alternatives to marine structures. But planning board member Sandy Andrews said the state is lax in enforcing that requirement.
