MOUNT DESERT — None of the town meeting election results was a surprise here Monday because the candidates who won were the only ones who ran. The outcome of the election was a foregone conclusion.

Given that – and the fact that there were no other issues to be decided in Monday’s election – why did 109 people still go to the trouble to vote?

“I think it’s a citizen’s right and responsibility to exercise his vote,” Bill Johnston said after casting his ballot at the Somesville fire station. “I’d sure be angry if somebody wanted to take it away from me.”

Martha Dudman, who was appointed to fill a vacancy on the board of selectmen last summer, won election to a three-year term on the board in voting here on Monday.

Laura Hendricks was re-elected to the Mount Desert school committee, and Caroline Pryor won the school committee seat being vacated by Gail Marshall. Chuck Bucklin was re-elected as one of Mount Desert’s representatives on the high school board of trustees.

Jenny Cunningham said she voted on Monday because she always votes.

“That’s a privilege,” she said, “and I’m not going to give it up for anyone.”
