Croquet Court Now Open, Lessons Offered at Woodlawn

Written by  Fenceviewer Staff Thursday, May 10, 2012 at 8:52 am

ELLSWORTH — One of Maine’s finest championship-sized croquet courts is now open at the Woodlawn Museum with activities scheduled from May through October.

Tuesday afternoon golf croquet will begin on May 22 from 2 to 4 p.m. with a social hour to follow.

The public is invited to join in with nonmembers of Woodlawn Croquet asked to contribute a $5 fee to help cover court maintenance costs.

One can learn to play golf croquet with just a short introductory lesson.

Lessons in six-wicket croquet will be offered on Monday, May 14, at 4 p.m. and Saturday, May 19, at 9:30 a.m.

To sign up, call the museum at 667-8671 or Perry Mattson, croquet committee chairman, at 667-9335.

Participants are asked to wear soft-soled shoes, and instruction and equipment will be provided.

The lessons are free but a fee of $10 per person is requested to help cover court maintenance.

Spectators are invited to the fifth annual Maine/New Hampshire Tournament, which will be held June 20-24 at Woodlawn with top players from both states competing in four flights.

Membership in Woodlawn Croquet is available for $150 and includes unlimited play from dawn to dusk, all equipment and instruction for the entire season.
