Eagles Rally Past Trojans

Written by  Hugh Bowden Sunday, May 06, 2012 at 2:18 pm

BAR HARBOR — Del Beckwith singled home the winning run in the top of the seventh inning and righthander Kyle Haslam pitched a complete game one-hitter as the Ellsworth Eagles nipped the Mount Desert Island Trojans 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.

The last-inning Eagle rally spoiled a superb pitching performance by Tom Paola in his first-ever varsity start for the Trojans.

The freshman righthander scattered nine hits, struck out three and walked nobody before being relieved by righthander Jon Phelps with one out in the seventh.

The Eagles mounted a couple of early threats against Paola but couldn’t push a run across the plate.

In the second inning, Riley DeWitt led off with a single and moved to third one out later on a double by Dustin Smelley.

But Paola struck out the next two batters to strand the runners.

The Trojans scored their only run in the third inning when Cam Crawford singled off Haslam’s glove, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored when Caleb MacDonald’s infield grounder was misplayed.

Ellsworth put two runners on again in the fourth as Brandon Braley singled, stole second and moved to third on an infield single by Smelley.

But once again, Paola came up with an out pitch, getting David Barnard on a pop-up to the shortstop.

The Eagles finally knotted the score with two outs in the top of the sixth when Riley DeWitt reached base, advanced to second on an error and scored when Nick Shaw, the Trojan shortstop, couldn’t handle a line drive by Braley.

Smelley then singled, but Braley tried to score from second and was thrown out at the plate by Phelps from left field.

In the seventh for the Eagles, Barnard barely beat out a leadoff single and was forced at second on a Cody Del Conte grounder back to Paola on the mound.

Conor Maguire then doubled, moving Del Conte to third and he raced home as Beckwith lined a first-pitch single to center field.

Phelps came on for the Trojans and ended the inning with consecutive strikeouts, but the damage was done.

Haslam retired the Trojans in order in the bottom of the inning for his second complete game win in as many outings.

He finished with eight strikeouts and three walks with Crawford’s single the only hit for MDI.
