BAR HARBOR — MDI Drama will present Agatha Christie’s mystery “Appointment with Death” this weekend as the second of its two-show spring play schedule.
Helmed by MDI Drama veteran director Chris Dougherty, the classic whodunit features Axis Fuksman-Kumpa as the wicked and manipulating Mrs. Boynton; Tyler Wood as her stepson Raymond Tyler; and Bradley Thurston as Lennox. And in a special appearance, techie Francis Snyder steps out from behind the light board and performs the role of Dr. Gerard, the sleuth who attempts to unravel the mystery.
The large cast includes Mia Jeannotte, Emily Butler, Sam Robertson, Jacob Frankel, Monica Phippen and newcomers Rhiannon Vonder Haar, Caitlin Schroeder, Flannery Dillon, Helena Munson, Raven Walczak, Robyn Hochman, Abby Irvine, Sierra Cast, Caleb Graham, Jasmine Bender and Elise Robertson.
Originally published in 1938, ‘Appointment with Death’ was adapted by Ms. Christie for the stage, though she omitted detective Hercule Poirot in the adaptation. The play opened at the Piccadilly Theatre in London in 1945 to rave reviews. It was later adapted by Hollywood, and EMI Pictures released a film starring Peter Ustinov in 1988. In 2008 the play was adapted for television starring David Suchet.
Ms. Christie’s own travels helped inform the novel, as did an archaeological dig she was involved in at Petra.
“Appointment with Death” runs in the Higgins-Demas Theater on Friday, May 11 and Saturday, May 12 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, May 13, at 2 p.m.
General admission tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens and may be purchased at the door.
