GOULDSBORO — Fire early Monday morning destroyed a large barn at Darthia Farm on West Bay Road, taking the lives of a number of horses, sheep, cattle, pigs, ducks and chickens.
The farm is owned by Bill and Cynthia Thayer. Cynthia said Monday morning that the fire started around 2 a.m. Monday. She said her husband woke her and said the barn was on fire.
“We got up,” she said, “I tried to get the sheep out. I burned my face.”
Bill attempted to free their three horses but, in the end, they lost all their animals with the exception of one chick. Lost were three horses, eight ewes, more than a dozen lambs, three head of cattle, two pigs, 11 ducks, 50 chickens and chicks and a cat as well as saddles and harnesses.
The fire raged for an hour, Cynthia said. When firefighters arrived, the barn was engulfed in flames so firefighters concentrated on saving the Thayers’ house some 30 feet from the barn
“The walls of the house were too hot to touch,” Cynthia said.
