TREMONT — Lobster boat sternman Sheldon Goldthwait is surrounded by a slew of woodworking tools for building a cedar-on-oak Bank dory with a 12-foot draft from scratch – with the help of Chummy Rich and Richard Helmke at Bass Harbor Boat.

“It’s good therapy,” said Mr. Goldthwait. “I’ve been out of the house all winter and my wife retired Friday, so it’s probably just in time.”

Mr. Goldthwait, a retired banker whose past dory-building projects have been miniatures, refers to himself as strictly an “amateur.”

“I thought I’d give dory-building a try,” he said. “If it weren’t for Chummy and Rich, I’d still be staring at the plans.”

Mr. Helmke, who is always happy to help a practicing wooden boatbuilder, got his start at Bass Harbor Boat when Chummy helped him on a boat restoration job.

“It’s a family of boatbuilders here,” said Mr. Helmke. “We like to help each other out. It’s good therapy for us too.”
