MOUNT DESERT — Residents here will vote on a budget for next fiscal year of just over $14 million at the annual open town meeting May 8 at Mount Desert Elementary School. The meeting starts at 6 p.m.
The overall budget includes $6.64 million for municipal services, $3.34 million for the elementary school, $2.49 million for Mount Desert Island High School and a county tax assessment of $787,920.
Based on current property valuations, the tax rate would increase by 6.6 percent to $6.28 per $1,000 of valuation. However, town manager Durlin Lunt said last week that with updated valuations, which assessor Kyle Avila is in the process of completing, he expects the actual increase in the tax rate to be smaller. Voters also will deal with a fireworks ban, a proposed cell phone tower moratorium , the issue of permitting sidewalk vendors, and approving money for an addition to the town hall.
On Monday, May 7, the day before the open town meeting, residents will go to the polls to fill one seat on the board of selectmen, two seats on the elementary school committee and one seat on the high school board of trustees. There are no contested races.
The polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Somesville fire station.
