TRENTON — Members of the Trenton school committee have both the best and worst records of attending meetings of the Mount Desert Island Regional School System (MDIRSS) board. One member has never missed a meeting, while another has not shown up for 15 months straight.
The MDIRSS board is made up entirely of members of the elementary school committees elected by citizens of each town in the school district.
According to the minutes of the past 16 meetings of the MDIRSS board, going back to Feb. 9, 2011, Judy Sproule, who is chairman of both the Trenton school committee and the MDIRSS board, has a perfect attendance record. She has attended four more meetings than the other four Trenton school committee members combined.
Susan Sargent has not been to any of the MDIRSS meetings in the past 15 months. Emily Muise has attended two meetings, Jennifer Bonilla three meetings, and Charlie Farley seven meetings.
The seats held by Mr. Farley and Ms. Sargent are both up for election this year. Ms. Sargent is running for another term. Mr. Farley is not.
Trenton has three votes on the school system board, but the Trenton delegation has had enough members present to cast all three of their votes at only three of the past 16 meetings. Over that period, the average number of Trenton representatives at MDIRSS board meetings was 1.75.
The five-member Bar Harbor school committee has four votes on the MDIRSS board. Mount Desert, Southwest Harbor and Tremont each has three votes.
Over the past 16 MDIRSS meetings, Mount Desert had the highest attendance record with an average of 3.75 members per meeting.
Bar Harbor was next with an average attendance of 3.5. Southwest Harbor had an attendance rate of 3.13, followed by Tremont at 2.19.
Bar Harbor school committee members Tom Burton and Brian Hubble are the only MDIRSS board members other than Ms. Sproule who have attended every meeting. Gail Marshall of Mount Desert has missed only one meeting. Heather Jones of Mount Desert and Cate McMullin of Tremont have missed only two each.
On the other end of the attendance scale, along with the three members of the Trenton delegation, are Noell Ellis of Tremont, who has been to only one MDIRSS meeting in the past 15 months, and Evelyn Wehrfritz of Tremont, who has attended three meetings.
Ms. Wehrfritz’s seat is up for election this year, but she is not seeking another term. Ms. Ellis’ current term expires next year.
