TRENTON — Tickets to fly Cape Air from Bar Harbor to Boston are going faster than a speeding bullet.

The New England-based air carrier is having success in its Downeast market since Cape Air’s grand opening at the Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport on April 15.

“We are thrilled to see the activity out at the airport,” said Cape Air spokesman Jacqueline Donohoo. “Between April 15th and as far out as we book in advance, we can see a total booking number of nearly 2,000 passengers.”

Airport Manager Allison Rogers said the airport handled double the passenger load it has historically had for the month of April.

Three-quarters of the flights scheduled for May have already been sold, Rogers said.

Low ticket prices have been behind the demand.

Cape Air has been offering airfare to Boston from Trenton for $59 if travelers buy tickets 14 days or more in advance. Less than 14 days in advance, tickets range from $69 to $99, Donohoo said.

Cape Air has a four-year agreement to operate out of the Trenton airport.
