BAR HARBOR — Mount Desert Island residents need to learn to adapt to a changing environment if they are to gain a fighting chance against the blooming tide of Lyme disease sweeping the area, according to tick expert Dr. Beatrice Szantyr.
The new reality of Lyme disease in Maine, which has included a 10-fold rise in reported cases from 100 in 2001 to 1,000 last year, must be accepted by the populace here if people are going to remain safe, Dr. Szantyr said. Her message, which includes ideas on prevention and treatment, will be presented at a Jesup Memorial Library lecture on Saturday, May 12.
“This is a way of giving folks the seatbelt or the life vest for the new way of thinking safely about continuing our outdoor activities, Dr. Szantyr said. “This disease is potentially preventable.”
Dr. Szantyr is schedule to present “Tick Talk” at the Jesup library on May 12 at 10:30 a.m. The event is free and open to the public.
