BAR HARBOR — A special town meeting to authorize borrowing $925,000 of additional money for major upgrades to the Duck Brook water pumping station is set for Thursday, June 7, just two days after the annual town meeting is to take place.
The matter cannot be dealt with at the annual town meeting, because town councilors learned of the need for additional cash too late in the scheduling process.
Just two weeks ago, councilors were told that the actual cost of the project, which includes government-mandated installation of an ultraviolet light treatment system, was nearly $1 million over the $2 million cost estimate used at town meeting last year when voters approved a bond for the project.
The June 7 town meeting will be an open one. A detailed explanation of the need for new funds is expected.
