DOVER-FOXCROFT — Annika Firestone, a junior righthander, was one error away from a perfect game as she pitched a no-hit 13-0 shutout over the Foxcroft Academy Ponies in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday.
Firestone struck out the game’s first batter but then mishandled a slow roller off the bat of Laura Wright before retiring the next 20 batters in order, striking out 11 of them, in Saturday’s 13-0 first-game win for the Eagles over Foxcroft Academy.
“She pitched a whale of a game,” said Ellsworth coach Rick Roberts.
Firestone also helped her own cause at the plate, driving in a run with three singles.
Ashlee Leighton-Bragg and Sam McGuire each drove in two runs with three singles and Katherine Jordan drove in three runs with a triple and two singles for Ellsworth.
Righthander Megan Hunt pitched a five-inning complete game, striking out five and allowing three hits, in the 16-1 second game win for the Eagles.
Jordan drove in two runs with a triple and a single, Cristin Wright singled twice to drive in three runs, Leighton-Bragg had two singles and Emily Berry doubled for Ellsworth.
