BAR HARBOR — Athletes from 14 teams — none but the host team from Hancock County — took part in Saturday’s annual Mount Desert Island Trojan Relays.
Contending with 25-mile-per-hour winds and chilly conditions, the Trojan boys came in third place with 82 points, just one point behind second-place Brewer High School, and the MDI girls placed sixth with 43 points.
“Because of the mental and physical strain that the wind and cold can exert on a competitor, (people) might have not suspected that many personal records would be set,” said Ethan Craigo, an athlete on the MDI outdoor track team. “This was not the case for much of the team. Where it was possible to succeed, determination won out against the wind.”
This year’s relays were marked by unique events, including the “shuttle hurdle” in which, according to Craigo, runners who had completed a series of hurdles would hand their baton off to their team members, running in the opposite direction.
There also were various medley events in which each runner on a team ran a different distance, including a coed sprinting medley.
The Trojans came up with several first-place finishes.
In the sprint medley, the boys’ “A” team of Carlo Keep, Matt Hanna, Brandon Murphy and Aidan Robichaud-Ward placed first in 4:14.
The MDI “A” team of Sean Harding, Aaron Jewett, Ezra Hallett and Jayson Burke took first in the shotputters’ four-by-100-meter relay with a time of 52.59 seconds.
In the girls’ four-by-800-meter relay, the “D” team of Dominique Hessert, Malia Demers, Isabel Erickson and Rachel McMinimy placed first with a time of 11:06.
The jumping events brought more success for the Trojans, with the boys’ high jump “A” team finishing first in the high jump with a combined jumping height of 15 feet, 8 inches.
The MDI shotputters also finished first in their main event, with the “A” team of Hallett, Chapin McFarland and Burke throwing a combined 116 feet, 6 inches.
The Trojans will host GSA, Sumner and five other teams Friday at 4 p.m.
