BAR HARBOR — Hannah Shaw, ace pitcher for the Mount Desert Island High School softball team, threw her second straight one-hitter on Thursday as MDI run-ruled George Stevens Academy 12-0 in the fifth inning. MDI is now 2-0 on the season.
Shaw successfully struck out eight GSA batters, walked three, and with the help of catcher Shelby O’Neil was able to turn several potential wild pitches into outs.
In the first inning, shortstop Sierra Myrick had a bunt single and a single into left-center, driving in early runs for the Trojans. Also in the first, GSA’s freshman pitcher Adreanna Simmons walked Abbie Burton. A bunt by Myrick sent Burton to second, and Burton scored on a throwing error.
In the second inning, centerfielder Danika Kanu was hit by a pitch, she stole second base, and capitalized on a fielder error to steal home – scoring another run for MDI.
In the third inning, MDI was walked four times and stole home on several of GSA’s wild pitches for three more runs. The Trojans added another three in the fourth on another hit by Myrick, this time a double along the left field line. Molly Carroll had a single, followed by a two-run single by Haley Littlefield.
After GSA brought in a substitute pitcher in the fifth, MDI scored two more runs to invoke the 12-0 run-rule that officially ended the game.
