CASTINE — Maine Maritime senior attack Andrew DiSalvo (Glastonbury, Conn.) has been named the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Men's Lacrosse Player of the Year in a vote of the league's coaches. He is one of four Mariners named to the All-NAC Team when it was released on Tuesday. Freshmen Nicholas Betti (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) and Ian Larcom (Middletown, R.I.) were named to the Second Team along with junior, Jason Smith (Portland).
DiSalvo put the finishing touches on a very impressive four-year career with his third-straight Player of the Year honor after being named the conference Rookie of the Year in 2009. DiSalvo, who was also a member of the all-conference first team, ranked among the top-ten in conference play in goals (17) and assists (16) while his 33 total points was third best in the conference. He heads into Wednesday's NAC Semifinals as the Academy's career-points leader with 229. He is the first Mariner to dole out 100 assists in his career.
Betti rolled up 21 of his 30 points on the season in league play with 17 goals and four assists against NAC opponents. The first-year middie scored both of his game-winning goals in league play. He has 42 ground balls and 10 caused turnovers on the season.
Larcom started on the back line for 13 of the Mariners' 14 games on the season, causing 29 turnovers and scooping 44 ground balls. He forced 14 turnovers and gathered 24 ground balls against NAC opponents.
Smith is an All-NAC choice for the third time in his career, having been named to the First Team in 2010 and Second Team in 2011. The defender has caused a team-best 37 turnovers and picked up 52 ground balls for MMA this year. In NAC play, the junior defender caused 25 turnovers and picked up 31 ground balls.
Maine Maritime is 6-8 under first-year head coach, Adam Sherman. The Mariners will appear in the NAC Semifinals for the fourth time in as many years this Wednesday. Maine Maritime is set to face New England College at 3:30 p.m. in Henniker, N.H.
