PORTLAND — Mount Desert Island High School sailors Sean Beaulieu, Paige Speight, Josiah Welch, Max Swann, Ailish Fahey, Sophia Krevans, Natalie Butler, and Lily Lichtenstein traveled to the O’Day qualifying regatta in Portland on April 21.
According to head coach George Deans, the race opened to cloudy skies and a light breeze of 5 to 7 knots. The winds were from the south-southwest all day and increased to 15 knots with some higher gusts in the afternoon.
Of the 10 teams in the O’Day qualifier, MDI placed 10th and didn’t score a berth in the regatta for this year.
“In spite of the results, it was a good day as the younger sailors got a great opportunity to gain sailing experience and confidence in an experienced field of sailors from the other schools,” said Coach Deans.
Now, the Trojans will gear up for their next race against GSA on Wednesday, May 2 beginning at 4 p.m. at Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, followed by a race in Portland on Sunday, May 6 at 10 a.m.
