SOUTHWEST HARBOR — School officials in Southwest Harbor and Tremont are hosting separate public hearings next week to discuss options for consolidation of the Pemetic Elementary School and the Tremont Consolidated School.
The hearings are an opportunity for residents of both towns to better inform themselves about issues surrounding combining the two schools. Next month, voters, during their town meeting elections, will weigh in on the consolidation issue in nonbinding referenda.
The public hearing at the Pemetic school is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 1. The hearing at the Tremont school is scheduled for the following day, Wednesday, May 2, at 6:30 p.m.
Consolidation of the two schools has been discussed for years and was driven by increasing costs and declining enrollment at both schools.
Voters in Southwest Harbor will consider the referendum questions on Tuesday, May 8. Tremont voters will do the same on Monday, May 14.
Mark Good covers the towns of Southwest Harbor and Tremont, cops and courts and writes arts and feature stories. When not on the job he can be found making music or flyfishing. He and his wife live in Tremont with a dog and two cats.
