BAR HARBOR — Howard Colter, who was superintendent of Mount Desert Island-area schools from 1992 to 2004, will return July 1 as interim superintendent.

He will serve for one year, while the Mount Desert Island Regional School System (MDIRSS) board searches for a permanent replacement for Rob Liebow, who is leaving to become superintendent of schools in Rockport, Mass. Mr. Liebow succeeded Mr. Colter as superintendent of School Union 98, which later became the MDIRSS.

The executive committee of the MDIRSS board recommended that Mr. Colter be hired as interim superintendent. Following a closed-door session Monday night, the full MDIRSS board accepted that recommendation.
