Mariners Cruise into NAC Semis

Written by  Fenceviewer Staff Sunday, April 29, 2012 at 9:53 am

CASTINE — Andrew DiSalvo (Glastonbury, Conn.) scored six goals and assisted on two more to lead Maine Maritime in a 22-4 romp over Johnson State in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Men's Lacrosse Quarterfinals on Saturday. The win propels the 6-8 Mariners into a Wednesday NAC Semifinal matchup at New England College. The loss closes the book on the Badgers season at 4-9.

DiSalvo wrapped up his first hat trick of the day with 10:20 left in the second qurter. His goal was the second in an 18-0 Maine Maritime run that started when Brian Corain (Berwick) potted the first of his three on the day with 12:09 in the second quarter. That marker broke a 4-4 tie and held up as the game-winner. Corain added two assists onto his hat trick.

Tom Houle (Manchester, N.H.) and Alex Hermes (Fallsington, Pa.) each posted three goals as well. Houle tacked on an assist, while Hermes won 15-of-17 faceoffs and scooped 10 ground balls on the day. Johnson's attack-turned-keeper, Matt Dekens (Johnson, Vt.) did everything he could for his team, denying 25 of Maine Maritime's 71 shots. His team only fired 13 in the other direction.

Johnson's Alex Petti (E. Greenwich, R.I.) and Maine Maritime's Nicholas Betti (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) accounted for the game's first four goals, with Petti opening the game's scoring before Betti's pair. Justin Nelson (Lakeville, Mass.) and Justin Connolly (Jeffersonville, Vt.) each scored a goal and assisted on another for the Badgers.

Maine Maritime dominated all phases of the game owning a 63-21 advantage in ground balls and securing 23 of the game's 30 faceoffs. The Mariners went 4-of-8 on the extra man, while holding Johnson scoreless through six extra-man opportunities.
