Insurance claim Denied

Written by  Fenceviewer Staff Sunday, April 29, 2012 at 8:28 am

SOUTHWEST HARBOR — Damage caused by a faulty heater coil in the ceiling of police chief David Chapais’ office Dec. 24 is not covered by insurance. The heater coil froze, causing a water pipe to freeze and burst. Water poured into the chief’s office, damaging some equipment. Total damages came to about $1,700.

The town’s insurance carrier, Maine Municipal Association Property & Casualty Pool, said in a recent letter to town officials that “damages to the heater coil are a result of freeze and are not a covered loss.”

The water damage to the office is covered, but the $490 cost is well below the town’s $1,000 deductible, so none of the town’s claim will be paid.
