BUCKSPORT — It will likely take several years to finish, but school officials are hopeful the façade at Bucksport High School will be getting a full-scale facelift in the near future.

The current façade is original to the building, which dates to 1963. School officials have said the façade, which is made of glass blocks, is not airtight or watertight and has an estimated R-value of 1.5.

R-values measure how effective a material is at holding heat. A higher R-value indicates a material is a more efficient insulator.

Regional School Unit 25 (RSU 25) officials have been working with Plymouth Engineering on developing a plan to replace the façade. The engineering firm came back with three options: brick veneer, horizontal panels or vertical panels.

Scott Frazier, chairman of the Facilities Committee, said committee members believed brick veneer would be the best fit.

Though a price for the project has yet to be finalized, school officials estimate it would cost less than $1 million. That is much less than what was originally thought, they said.
