UPDATE: Brooklin Man Succumbs to Injuries from Fire

Written by  Fenceviewer Staff Friday, April 27, 2012 at 12:48 pm

BROOKLIN — A man who, according to state police, was severely burned while trying to commit suicide behind the Brooklin Inn Tuesday died Thursday evening at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Chris Angell was 39.

Angell’s father, Chip Angell, said the family is holding a funeral Sunday in New Jersey.

The family is planning a memorial service at the Brooklin Inn on Sunday, May 7, from 1 to 3 p.m.

Angell leaves one daughter, Kendra, who is 7.

“He struggled with mental illness almost all his life,” Chip Angell said of his son.

Chris was a champion tennis player who went to college on a tennis scholarship. He graduated from Clemson University.

Most recently, Chris had been working as a carpenter and a tennis instructor.

“He was always a hardworking, happy guy,” Chip Angell said. “His schizophrenia would lead him to drink. He self-medicated with that.”

Angell said he and his son had met with his son’s counselor on Monday.

“None of us expected him to do this,” Angell said. “He said he wasn’t suicidal.”
