MOUNT DESERT — Residents in Mount Desert will go to the polls at the Somesville fire station on Monday, May 7, to fill one seat on the board of selectmen, two seats on the school committee and one seat on the high school board of trustees.

None of the races is contested, with only one candidate for each seat up for election.

The polls will be open from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m.

The annual open town meeting is set for Tuesday, May 8, at 6 p.m. at Mount Desert Elementary School. Along with the municipal and school budgets for next year, residents will vote on several proposed ordinances including a ban on the sale and use of consumer fireworks, a six-month moratorium on the approval of cell phone towers, and regulation of the sale of food or merchandise on public property.

Southwest Harbor

The open town meeting in Southwest Harbor is set for Monday, May 7, at 7 p.m. at Pemetic Elementary School.

Residents will vote on the municipal and school budgets for next year and related financial matters.

The election of town officials and secret-ballot voting on a number of other issues is set for Tuesday, May 8, at the Southwest Harbor fire station. The polls will be open from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.

Three candidates – Michael Sawyer and incumbents Skip Strong and Susan Allen – are vying for two seats on the school committee. There is only one candidate each for one seat on the board of selectmen and the high school trustees board.

Voters also will be asked if they want to authorize selectmen to withdraw the town from membership in the Acadia Disposal District, and in a nonbinding referendum, they can choose one of three options on the question of consolidating Pemetic Elementary School and Tremont Consolidated School.
