ELLSWORTH — The Ellsworth Eagles managed just five hits in a first-game 5-2 loss to the Caribou Vikings, but hammered 13 hits off the same pitcher in a 16-3 win in the second half of a doubleheader on Saturday.
Righthander Megan Hunt took the loss for the Eagles in the first game, yielding seven hits with six strikeouts and two walks.
Ellsworth took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Phyllicia Jordan tripled and scored on a throwing error.
But the Vikings answered with three runs on three hits in the third and added two more on two hits, a walk and an Eagle error in the fifth.
Ellsworth scored one more run in the sixth when Ashlee Leighton-Bragg singled and scored on a single by Cristin Wright.
Righthander Emily Staples went the distance for Caribou, striking out 11 Ellsworth batters.
But Staples found much tougher going in the second game,giving up 13 hits before being replaced in the late going.
Righthander Annika Firestone pitched for the Eagles, allowing just four hits and striking out six in six innings.
Firestone also had three singles and a walk and scored twice for the Eagles.
Leighton-Bragg doubled, singled and walked, driving in three runs, Wright had two singles and freshman Emily Berry drilled a two-run double as the Eagles notched their first win after two losses.
