Trojans Edge Eagles

Written by  Hugh Bowden Friday, April 20, 2012 at 10:55 am

BAR HARBOR — The MDI Trojans managed just three hits in a complete game pitching effort by GSA’s Schuyler Van der Eb on Thursday.

But Brody Bowden doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jon Phelps in the fifth inning to lift the Trojans to a 2-1 win over Van der Eb and the Eagles.

GSA had eight hits against MDI’s Steve Hanscom, who was making his first-ever varsity start.

But the Trojans turned several double plays and cut down a run at the plate on an attempted suicide squeeze bunt by the Eagles.

“Ben Walls made a couple of really good plays at third and he was the one who threw the guy out at home,” said MDI coach Mike Swanson.

As for MDI’s three hits, Swanson said his players need more patience at bat. “I don’t think we were as selective at bat as we’ve been,” he said.

Swanson also noted that all teams are adjusting to new bat regulations put in place for safety reasons.

Teams have been forced to switch from aluminum bats, which produce a ball exit speed faster than new regulations allow, to wooden or composite bats with a BBCOR (batted ball coefficient of restitution) certification.

The BBCOR formula measures the “bounciness” of the bat and ball, rather than the speed of the ball after it is struck.
