BAR HARBOR — Dan Granholm is leaving Mount Desert Island High School at the end of the school year after 14 years as music director there.
Asked why he is resigning, Mr. Granholm said, “Before I started this job, I had an interview with my predecessor, Dick Ordway, the day before he sailed away on his catamaran. One of the things he said that has been stuck in my mind the last few years was, ‘Don’t do what I did.’”
Mr. Granholm said he asked Mr. Ordway what he meant.
“He said, ‘Well, Dan, I didn’t really raise my boys. The only reason I knew them was that they took music in high school.’
“Now, after 14 years, I feel like I’m doing the same thing he did,” Mr. Granholm said. “I spend too much time here, and I need to spend time with my wife and kids before my kids grow up.”
He has three children, age 9, 6 and 2.
“I’m not going anywhere; I’m going to stay here,” he said. “But I’m excited about trying to do something new.”
Among the highlights of Mr. Granholm’s tenure as music director were the high school band’s participation in the New Year’s Day Parade and Festival in London in 2008 and 2011.
Dick Broom never seems to walk anywhere without a faithful dog at his side. His beat includes the towns of Mount Desert and Trenton, Mount Desert Island High School and the regional school system board and superintendent's office. He and his wife live in Bar Harbor.
