High School Sailors Start Climb Up Championship Ladder

Written by  Stephen Rappaport Monday, April 23, 2012 at 9:08 am

BLUE HILL — Every ladder has a lowest rung, and for the sailors of George Stevens Academy the first rung on the ladder that leads to the national high school fleet racing championship is the Hannaford’s parking lot in Bucksport.

At 6 a.m. Saturday, coach Tom Gutow will muster seven members of the GSA sailing team and head for Portland and the qualifying round of the O’Day Trophy regatta. Coach George Deans said that Mount Desert Island High School plans to send its entire sailing team to Portland, but only six of the Trojans’ most experienced sailors are actually expected to race this weekend.

If the Eagles or the Trojans finish in the top two, they will head for Osterville, Mass., to sail in the regatta finals on Sunday.

The two top finishers in the O’Day Trophy event will qualify to race against 18 other high school teams from around the country for the Mallory Cup, emblem of the national high school fleet racing championship. This year, the Mallory regatta will be sailed on Lake Union in Seattle May 11-13.
