Lady Mariners Sweep Farmington

Written by  Fenceviewer Staff Saturday, April 21, 2012 at 8:38 am

CASTINE — Maine Maritime swept Maine-Farmington in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) twinbill at Ritchie Field on Friday afternoon. The Mariners (14-14, 7-9 NAC) plated four runs in the bottom of the sixth to break a 1-1 deadlock and hung on for a 5-1 win in the opener. Erica Taylor (Mesquite, Texas) broke the Mariners' single season home run record and tacked on one more for good measure to erase the Beavers' (10-18, 6-8 NAC) early lead in the nightcap, a 7-5 Mariners' win.

Farmington led the second game 4-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth. Leah Jackson (Dedham) led Maine Maritime off with a walk, followed by a Sabrina Keach (Chesterville) single to set the table for Taylor. Taylor blasted a three-run shot some 25 yards over the leftfield fence to break Jackson's single-season home run mark from 2011, and to get her team back within one. Keach doubled in the fifth to drive in two more, giving Maine Maritime its first lead, 5-4. She came home on Taylor's 10th shot of the year, making it a 7-4 game.

Taylor became the sixth player in Maine Maritime history to hit two home runs in the same game, tying that school record. She also helped her own cause in the circle. She improved to 5-8, allowing five runs, four earned, on 11 hits and struck out three. It spoiled the afternoon for Kaitlyn Bartlett (Chestervile), who retired the first nine batters she faced in game two. Bartlett worked both halves of the doubleheader, slipping to 5-9. She fanned four in each contest.

Taylor's two home runs were her only hits on the afternoon. She plated five runs in the sweep. Keach went 3-for-6 driving in three and scoring as many, while Jackson went 2-for-5 with three runs scored on the day. Cindy Schultz (Bingham) went 4-for-6 on the doubleheader with an RBI.

Abby Yeo (Bucksport) twirled a gem in the opener, allowing a single unearned run on three hits. She seated six batters and issued a single walk. Only two of Maine Maritime's runs were earned in the first game. Bartlett limited the Mariners to six hits in the opener.

Bartlett did everything she could at the dish to help herself out. The junior went 5-for-6 on the doubleheader with two runs driven in and one scored. Her single into leftfield plated Michelle Cote (Arundel) in the Beavers' two-run first of the nightcap. Hannah Lust (Bangor) snuck one through the left side to drive in a run in the frame as well. Lust converted Bartlett's leadoff single in the second into a run with a ground-rule double into left field making it 3-0 after three. Bartlett drove in another run in the fourth to make it 4-0 before Taylor went to work. Lust, Cote and Amy Jones (Augusta) each picked up a pair of hits on the day.

The teams traded unearned runs in the first inning of the first game. It remained 1-1 until the home half of the sixth, sparked by Jackson's leadoff single. Keach reached on an error at first base, allowing Jackson third. Autumn Jones (Windham) brought Jackson home for the go-ahead run. Keach later scored on a wild pitch. Schultz and Andi Flannery (E. Machias) each drove in insurance runs for Yeo.

The sweep closes out the regular season for Maine Maritime. The Mariners will let the weekend play out before learning their conference playoff destination. Farmington hosts Husson in NAC play on Saturday.
