TREMONT – Selectmen on Tuesday made short work of their agenda, signing a consent agreement, naming a new road and making plans for an underwater cleanup of Bass Harbor.
The consent agreement concerns a tree-cutting violation at a Goose Cove property owned by Alex and Elizabeth Salvi of Darien, Conn. Last month, code enforcement officer Carl Young discovered that 42 trees on the property had been cut down in the shoreland zone, a violation of the town’s zoning ordinance.
After Mr. Young issued a notice of violation to the Salvis on March 26, the couple indicated they were willing to cooperate with the town and correct the violation. Mr. Young drafted the consent agreement, which has been signed by the Salvis. On Tuesday, selectmen voted 4-0 to sign the agreement.
Under the agreement, the Salvis are to replant the area where the trees were removed using a plan developed by a licensed forester. The planting is to be done before the first frost of this year and inspected twice a year for five years by both a forester and the code enforcement officer.
In addition, the Salvis agree to pay the town $831 in fines and cover all town employee and legal costs. Town manager Millard Billings told selectmen that a check for the expenses accompanied the Salvis’ signed agreement.
Selectmen also unanimously approved a request to name a new road Backside Way. The private road is off the Clark Point Road.
Chairman Chris Eaton opened discussion of the cleanup of Bass Harbor, saying that the League of Underwater Superheroes, a Mount Desert Island diving club, is conducting an underwater cleanup of the harbor on Sunday.
The cleanup will focus on areas in the harbor that were not part of the federal dredging project completed last year, Mr. Eaton said. He asked the board how members would like to dispose of items brought to the surface.
“There will probably be a lot of stuff,” he said.
Selectmen agreed to provide roll-off trash bins for the effort and separate metal items from other trash. The metal is to be sold as scrap.
