BUCKSPORT — An attentive passer-by and quick action by a police officer are credited with preventing extensive damage at a Route 1 bar after fire broke out there early Tuesday morning.
Fire Chief Craig Bowden said a motorist driving by Tozier’s II Bar & Grill around 1 a.m. April 17 noticed flames on the front of the building and called police.
A nearby on-duty police officer responded and used a fire extinguisher in his cruiser to slow the flames. Firefighters showed up within minutes and extinguished the fire, which had spread to the inside of the building.
Damage amounted to about $2,500 and was confined to a relatively small space, which Bowden attributed to the quick response. The property is insured.
Bowden said the fire appears to have been caused by improper disposal of a cigarette in a flower box on the front of the building.
Firefighters worked to clear smoke and water out of the building, and Bowden said the bar was open for business by Tuesday night.
