DMR Approves Surry Mussel Farm

Written by  Stephen Rappaport Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at 4:05 pm

SURRY — The Department of Marine Resources has approved Terry Gray’s application for a three-year experimental aquaculture lease to raise mussels on a four-acre site off the southeastern end of Newbury Neck in upper Blue Hill Bay.

The lease allows Gray to grow mussels on lines suspended from as many as three 40-foot–by-40-foot rafts anchored in a cove south of High Head.

At a public hearing last October, Gray’s application drew strong opposition from nearby landowners and the Friends of Blue Hill Bay, a local conservation organization.
