Eagles Manhandle Tigers

Written by  Hugh Bowden Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at 1:36 pm

BLUE HILL — Senior lefthander Ben Olivari survived major scoring threats in the first two innings to pitch a five-inning three-hitter as the GSA Eagles downed the Sumner Tigers 11-1 on Tuesday.

The Tigers put two runners on base in the first inning and three in the second but failed to score.

GSA took the lead with a run in the first, added five in the second, four in the third and a single run in the fourth as the Eagles hammered nine hits against Summer starter Tristan Rayner and reliever Justin Chipman.

Finn McMahon-Allwine led GSA at the plate with three singles, driving in four runs, and Mariner Cheney drove in two runs with a single and a fielder’s choice.

Olivari had some solid defensive help, most notably a leaping catch by first baseman Gavin Rogers of a line drive by Connor Lee to end the first inning and stifle the Tigers’ threat to score.

The Tigers scored their only run in the fourth inning when Dillan Harmon reached base on a GSA error, stole second, moved to third on an infield single by Lee and scored on a sacrifice fly by Sam Smith.
