BOSTON — Coping with temperatures that reached the mid-80s, seven Hancock County runners completed the 116th annual Boston Marathon on Monday.
Timothy F. Tunney, 37, of Ellsworth led the local field of runners, placing 905th overall with a time of 3 hours, 8 minutes and 6 seconds.
According to Associated Press reports, 22,426 runners — about 84 percent of the 26,716 who registered — actually started the race.
Because of the high temperatures, race organizers offered those who picked up their registration packets but opted not to run the opportunity to hold a place for next year’s race.
Among those registered who did not run were Judson Cake and David Painter, both of Bar Harbor, and Matt Homich and Warren Hughes, both of Ellsworth.
County runners who finished behind Tunney on Monday:
Gary Allen, 55, of Cranberry Isles was 1,447th in 3:16:10.
Stephen R. Whalen, 50, of Bernard was 4,219th in 3:38:05.
James Newett, 54, of Ellsworth was 5,058th in 3:42:51 in his 17th consecutive Boston Marathon.
Katrina M. Bisheimer, 46, of Bucksport was the first county woman to finish, placing 7,771st in 3:56:14.
Mary Dudzik, 49, of Bar Harbor was 9,943rd in 4:06:55.
Tuesdi M. Woodworth, 50, of Bar Harbor was 10,295th in 4:08:47.
In the women’s race, Sheri Piers of Falmouth had a superb performance as the first American-born woman to finish on Monday.
Piers was 10th overall with a time of 2:41:55.
The overall winners were Kenyan runners Wesley Korir in 2:12:40 and Sharon Cherop with a time of 2:31:50.
