MDI Tracksters Prepare for Season

Written by  Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at 10:44 am

BAR HARBOR — Under the guidance of new co-head coaches and a cast of long-time assistants, the Mount Desert Island High School outdoor track team is readying for the team’s first meet against Bangor on Friday, April 20.

Desiree Sirois, Brian O’Connell, and Renee Laber will all serve as the team’s coaching staff this season.

“Our program has had such a great foundation for such a long time that it’s been a fairly seamless transition,” said Sirois of Ian Braun’s departure as head coach from the team. “Renee has been with the program for a very long time and Brian has coached in the program before; we just hope to continue building the program with these great kids.”

Sirois is already impressed with the overall cohesiveness and camaraderie of the group which boasts nearly 60 athletes.

“The amount of positive energy and enthusiasm I’ve seen on the track is unbelievable,” she said. “I’m really happy with the drive they have. They’re just an unbelievable group.”

With the team’s healthy turnout, Sirois has high hopes for the season.

“Right now, we’re just working on instilling in them the philosophy that hard work will beat talent when talent doesn’t work hard,” she said. “We want to stay committed.”
