MDI Baseball Takes to Field

Written by  Sunday, April 08, 2012 at 10:32 am

BAR HARBOR — Cameron Crawford drove home the winning run for the Mount Desert Island High School baseball team against Calais in first preseason doubleheader on Saturday.

The score was 8-8 when Crawford cracked a double and sent Dylan Carroll across home plate for a 9-8 win.

MDI tied Calais in the first game, 4-4.

“It was really good overall,” said head coach Mike Swanson. “The veterans who returned played great and younger kids got over their nerves and played well. There were a lot of pleasant surprises and I was pleased overall with the pitching.”

According to Swanson, freshman Thomas Paola had a good opening day at the plate. Brody Bowden pitched two innings of relief and had three hits in his first varsity game ever, and Dylan Carroll had a good outing in left field and also had three hits.

“And my core players, Caleb MacDonald, Nick Shaw, Ben Walls, Colin Mooers, and Trevor Alley all had at least three or four hits each,” said Swanson. “They’re solid. Then when Cameron (Crawford) hit the winning run, it capped off the day really well.”

Swanson is happy with MDI’s performance considering the strength of Calais’ baseball program.

“They’re a really good team,” he said. “They’re going to win a lot of games. But they were telling us, ‘You’re going to be one of the best in B.’”

Swanson hopes so. “We should be right in the hunt,” he said.
