BAR HARBOR — In a chilly season opener, the Mount Desert Island High School varsity softball team battled Calais in a doubleheader for the team’s first scrimmage of the spring.
Despite posting 10 hits to Calais’ three, the Trojans lost the first game 8-6. But MDI rallied in the second game to win 11-5.
During the second game, Abbie Burton scored for MDI in the first inning after Sierra Myrick hit a base hit single.
In the third, MDI outscored Calais 3-0 after a leadoff base hit by Brigitte Parady and a triple by Hannah Shaw. Molly Carroll, Shelby O’Neil, and Sierra Myrick scored runs for MDI, knotting the score at 4-4.
At the top of the fifth, MDI grabbed another two runs and shut out Calais 2-0, then outscored Calais 3-1 in the seventh to win the game.
“We definitely looked better in that second game,” said head coach Bruce Walls. “We had to shake out the jitters a bit, I guess. For a lot of the kids, that was their first time ever in a varsity uniform.”
MDI had a total 25 hits in both games combined, a good sign for Walls whose goal has been a reconfiguration of the Trojan’s offense.
The team is scheduled to travel to Sumner in another preseason game at 4 p.m. on Wednesday. The Trojans will be on the road for another scrimmage against Bangor at 4 p.m. on Thursday, followed by a preseason tournament in Belfast on Saturday.
The team is readying for the first regular season game against Washington Academy at home on Tuesday, April 17 at 4:30 p.m.
