DEER ISLE — The diverse student population at Deer Isle-Stonington High School is clearly illustrated by a glimpse of future plans among its graduating class.

In a class of 36, three members already hold professional lobster fishing licenses and three others have been accepted to Harvard University.

“Deer Isle-Stonington High School really is a school that can prepare students for any postsecondary path they choose,” Principal Todd West said on Twitter.

“I think this is what makes our school so great,” responded Seth Laplant, a math teacher at the school. “Diverse futures. I would like to think we meet the needs of all groups and hope to do so more in the future.”

The top three academic achievers in the Class of 2012 have been accepted to Harvard. One has been accepted unconditionally and two have been placed on a wait list and will be admitted to the prestigious Ivy League school when there is an opening.

Class Valedictorian Ann Dunham has been accepted to Harvard, as well as Yale and Dartmouth.

“I haven’t decided,” she said on April 12. “I’m going to visit them all next week, and I’ll decide then.”

Her decision will be based on which school offers the best match for pursuing her academic interests, which are far-reaching.

“Mathematics, biology, Spanish — or art, or philosophy,” she said when asked what she wants to major in. “Yale has a philosophy and mathematics major.”

Her professional path is equally undecided.

“I have no idea what I would end up doing,” she said.
