MDI Sailors out in Front

BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island High School sailing team opened its season with a win at the Marblehead Team Race Regatta on March 26 in Marblehead, Mass.

At Marblehead, the team sailed two full rotations under an east-southeast breeze that was blowing 8 to 16 knots.

Marblehead took the first race over George Stephens Academy (GSA) of Blue Hill with two wins to none, MDI bested GSA 2-1 in the second race, and Marblehead beat MDI 2-0 in the third.

The tide turned toward MDI in the final six team races, with the Trojans sailing ahead of GSA 2-1 in their next match and beating Marblehead 2-1 for the final.

Overall scores were MDI with three wins and one loss, Marblehead had two wins and two losses, and GSA had one win and three losses.

In another round of team races on Sunday, April 1, MDI fell behind GSA with two wins and two losses to GSA’s three wins and one loss. Marblehead posted only one win and three losses.

The Trojans bested the Eagles in a race on Wednesday, April 4 out of Great Harbor in Southwest Harbor after posting numerous first-place finishes.

The sailing team will race against GSA again on Wednesday, April 11, and Wednesday, April 18, before the Portland O’Day Regatta on Saturday, April 21 in Portland.
