BAR HARBOR — Tickets are on sale now for the Acadia Community Theater (ACT) presentation of the classic musical “Fiddler on the Roof.” Performances are scheduled for Friday through Sunday, April 13 to 15, at Mount Desert Island High School.
Written by Jerry Bock, Sheldon Harrick and Joseph Stein, “Fiddler on the Roof” is the Tony Award-winning musical based on stories by Sholes Aleichem about Tavy the Milkman and his family. The musical was the first commercially successful English-language stage production about Jewish life in Eastern Europe. It is the 15th-longest running musical in the United States. It won nine Toys and has spawned four revivals in the United States, and three in England.
The story centers on Tavy and his attempts to maintain his family and Jewish traditions while outside influences encroach upon their lives. He must cope with the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters, as each one’s choice of husband moves further away from the customs of his faith; and he must deal with an edict that evicts Jews from their village.
It includes the songs “If I Were a Rich Man,” “Matchmaker, Matchmaker” “Sunrise, Sunset,” “Do You Love Me,” and many more.
ACT performances are set for April 13 at 7 p.m., April 14 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and April 15 at 2 p.m.
It is directed by Brian Sheppard with musical direction by Vivian Hyde, and boasts a cast of more than 60 community members.
Tickets are on sale now and can be reserved by calling 801-8700. They will be available at the high school box office beginning Monday, April 9, from 5 to 7 p.m. and one hour before each performance. Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for senior citizens and $8 for children younger than 12.
ACT was created in 1994 to stage shows for and including children in the Mount Desert Island area. It is a nonprofit charitable organization that typically stages two shows a year.
