Mariners Sweep Buccaneers

Written by  Fenceviewer Staff Sunday, March 25, 2012 at 9:21 am

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. — Sophomore Andi Flannery (East Machias) rapped out four hits and drove in four runs to lead Maine Maritime to a sweep of a non-league college softball doubleheader of Massachusetts Maritime by scores of 3-0 in the opener and 20-1 in the nightcap in games played Saturday afternoon at Alison Rollins Field.

The visiting Mariners (5-1) amassed all of the offense they needed in the third inning of the opening contest, as RBI singles by Flannery and sophomore Ashley Burnett (Danville, N.H.) sandwiched a fielding error staked Maine Maritime to its eventual three-run margin of victory.  Flannery and junior Sabrina Keach (Chesterville) each collected two hits as part of a seven-hit attack for the visitors in support of sophomore Erica Taylor (Mesquite, Texas).

Taylor scattered nine hits and struck out 12 in going the distance to improve to 2-1 on the season.  The host Buccaneers (0-6) threatened in the first, sixth and seventh frames against Taylor, as Massachusetts Maritime placed a pair of runners in scoring position in each of those innings, but was unable to push any across.

Junior Janelle Beaulieu (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) supported her own cause by going a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate in the opening for the hosts, who also received a perfect 3-for-3 effort from senior Holly McLaughlin (Belmont, Mass.), as the duo each rapped out doubles in the opener.  Beaulieu suffered the setback inside the circle for the Buccaneers, allowing an earned run and fanning five to fall to 0-3 on the spring.

Massachusetts Maritime jumped out to a 1-0 first inning lead in the nightcap on sophomore Amanda Tine's (Chelmsford, Mass.) RBI groundout. Maine Maritime took control of the contest with a four-run, second inning outburst keyed by a two-run double by Flannery, a run-scoring double off the bat of freshman Abby Yeo (Bucksport) and an RBI single by junior Autumn Jones (Windham). Jones' two-run inside-the-park homer extended the Mariners' lead to 6-1 in the third.  The visitors broke things open with nine unearned runs in the fourth, highlighted by Taylor's two-run double, and Maine Maritime closed out the scoring with five more tallies in the fifth on RBI doubles by freshmen Cindy Schultz (Bingham) and Kelsie Hilton (Monmouth) as well as run-scoring singles from Taylor and freshman Haley Rae (Belfast).

Flannery, Taylor and Jones each had two hits and three RBI as part of an 18-hit nightcap attack for the Mariners, as Yeo helped her own cause on the mound with two hits and two RBI at the plate while allowing two hits and an unearned run while striking out nine to improve to 2-0 on the season.

The Mariners' seven doubles tied the school record for doubles in a game, while the 20 runs mark the third most prolific game in program history as do the 18 hits and 19 RBI.

Beaulieu collected her fifth hit of the twinbill in the second contest for the Buccaneers, who also received a safety from junior Meghan Thibeault (Scituate, Mass.).  Sophomore Jennifer March (Pawtucket, R.I.) fanned a pair in going the distance inside the circle for the hosts.

Maine Maritime heads to Boston this afternoon for a non-league twinbill with Fisher that begins at 11:00 a.m.
