ELLSWORTH — The Lawrence boys’ team of sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders, which draws its name from Lawrence High School in the Fairfield area, downed Brewer 48-38 in Sunday’s championship final.
Brewer had beaten the Ellsworth-1 team 52-44 on Sunday morning to advance to the final.
The three-day tournament for middle school level players attracted 20 boys’ teams and was played at three venues: the Ellsworth Elementary-Middle School with its two gyms, Ellsworth High School and the Trenton Elementary School.
Numerous volunteers assisted Sheriff’s Department personnel with the various tasks involved in running the tournament.
The event grossed approximately $17,500, and money remaining after expenses are covered will go into the Sheriff’s Charities Fund, which provides annual support for a number of worthy causes.
Walmart was a primary sponsor of the event.
