ELLSWORTH — There will be nonstop basketball at four area locations from Friday afternoon to Sunday afternoon as the 12th annual Hancock County Sheriff’s Cup basketball tournament runs its course.
With 40 boys’ and girls’ middle school level basketball teams, the field is one of the largest ever, and scores of volunteers will be lending a hand at the various venues.
Competition will get under way Friday at 4 p.m. at the Ellsworth High School gymnasium, two gyms at the Ellsworth Elementary-Middle School and at the Trenton Elementary School.
Because of the increased number of teams, the tournament format has changed from recent years.
All teams will play a minimum of three games, with the first two in a round-robin type format on Friday and Saturday.
A single elimination tournament will then follow beginning Saturday at 2:15 p.m. and teams already have been assigned specific time slots for the elimination play, which will narrow the field to the girls’ and boys’ championship match-ups.
Games will consist of two 15-minute periods, with each team allowed three one-minute time-outs and two 30-second time-outs per game.
Overtime periods, if needed, with be three minutes with one full-time time-out allowed for each team.
Food concessions will be available at the various venues throughout the tournament, and qualified officials from the area will work each of the games.
The tournament, a fund-raiser for the Sheriff’s Charities Fund, usually nets several thousands of dollars for a number of worthy causes supported by the fund.
