Dolphin Swimmers Win 11 State Titles

ORONO — The Dolphins of the James Russell Wiggins Down East Family YMCA won championships in 11 events, set seven team records and recorded 142 personal best swims in last weekend’s Maine State YMCA Swim Meet at the University of Maine.

The Dolphins placed fourth overall with 1,642.5 points and captured team championships for boys ages 9-10 and combined ages 9-10.

The Long Reach Swim Club was the overall winners with 3,045.5 points, followed by the Penobscot Bay Area YMCA with 1,919 and the Mount Desert Island Sharks with 1,869.5.

In individual competition, Camden Holmes, Atila Tanik and Sam Alvarado were double winners.

Holmes set team records in two events, winning the 50-yard freestyle in 27.96 seconds and the 50-yard butterfly in 31.50 seconds for boys ages 9-10.

Tanik set a team record of 34.83 seconds in winning the 50-yard backstroke and won the 100-yard individual medley in 1:14.44 for boys ages 9-10.

Alvarado won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:04.02 and the 50-yard butterfly in 29.04 seconds for boys ages 11-12.

Keith Chandler won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.47 and was runner-up in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 55.19 seconds for senior boys.

Sidney Hamilton won the 100-yard individual medley for girls ages 9-10 with a time of 1:14.53.

In the relay competition, Tanik, Sam Pelletier, Camden Holmes and Isaac Weaver set a team record of 2:19.45 in winning the 200-yard medley for boys ages 9-10.

Hank Vinall, Cooper Holmes, Talor Hamilton and Kohl Shaw set a team record of 1:59.57 in winning the 200-yard medley for boys ages 13-14.

The foursome of Caitlin MacPherson, Katie Hammer, Ellie Clarke and Sidney Hamilton won the 200-yard freestyle relay for girls ages 9-10 with a time of 2:11.38.

Erin Connery also set a team record of 2:00.96 with her fourth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle for senior girls.

Several other Dolphin swimmers also turned in runner-up and third place performances.

Talor Hamilton was second in the 100-yard freestyle in 52.89 seconds and the 100-yard backstroke in 59.66 seconds for boys ages 13-14.

Cooper Holmes was second in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:14.68 and third in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:06.24 for boys ages 13-14.

Ellie Clarke was third in the 50-yard freestyle in 30.46 seconds and the 100-yard freestyle in 1:10.36 for girls ages 9-10.

Lilja Hanson was third in the 25-yard breaststroke in 23.62 seconds for girls ages 8 and under.

Cece McEachern was third in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:12.32 for senior girls.

Calvin Nelson was third in the 25-yard breaststroke in 23.88 seconds for boys ages 8 and under.

Sam Pelletier was third in the 50-yard breaststroke in 41.97 seconds for boys ages 9-10.

Turning runner-up finishes in the relays:

Julia Perconti, Hanson, Lillian Frank and Kristy Barry were second in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:20.70 for girls ages 8 and under.

Taylor Wardwell, Lainey Cohen, McEachern and Connery were second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:46.49 for senior girls.

The foursome of Pelletier, Beckett Markosian, Brandon Aponte and Weaver was third in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:22.03 for boys ages 9-10.

The foursome of Sam TeHennepe, Brian Whalley, Austin Baron and Alvarado was third in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:01.96 for boys ages 11-12.
